LANGUAGE GROUP KICK OFF!

The International Business Club is proud to present its first ever Language Group Kick Off! Here you'll get to learn about the different language groups available and get the opportunity to join some of several language groups.
SPEAKERS
1) Dr. Derek C. Carr,
Associate Professor Emeritus, Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies, UBC
Founder of Society of Translator and Interpreter in BC
"I shall speak briefly about my own introduction to foreign languages and the effect it had on me, and follow up with a few observations on the process of language learning, and then some examples of career options in which a knowledge of two or more languages would be a definite advantage."
2) Fenella Sung, Registrar 2009-2010 STIBC Board of Directors
Fenella Sung is a Certified Translator (Chinese to English, English to Chinese) and Certified Court Interpreter (English/Cantonese) with more than 20 years of experience in the field. She holds a degree in English Language and Comparative Literature and has undertaken legal studies in selected subjects.
Fenella joined STIBC in 1994/5 and has served in various capacities on the board. She was President of the Society from 2004 to 2006. Her educational and community involvement includes serving as a voting member of the Committee on Translation Services of the Canadian General Standards Board and a member of the Advisory Committee on the National Project of Healthcare Interpretation. She also served, in an ex-officio capacity, as the Communications Chair on the Steering Committee for the FIT 2002 World Congress held in Vancouver, BC.

The UBC International Business Club is hiring coordinators for our Spanish and German Language Groups.
Responsibilities
• Planning culture and language related events to engage group members in learning a specific language and culture
• Establishing and maintaining partnerships between language groups and related cultural clubs
Expectations
• Be driven and self motivated
• Have in-depth understanding of a specific language and culture
• Effective English communication skills
• Peer support and event planning experience an asset
